Five Facts about Wedding Ring Budget

1. Recession has hit almost every market today, and the jewelry industry is also not spared. Thus couples today spend each penny of their hard-earned money very wisely on jewelry. But the wedding jewelry especially wedding rings is the only adornment which needs to be worn for a lifetime and so its budget gets hardly affected by the cash-strapped conditions of the economy.

2. Even though the ring may be made of precious metals, but there exists a huge difference even between the prices of these metals. Platinum costs a lot more than gold, which makes gold a reliable option. Some brides and grooms-to-be today even select silver or titanium rings for lesser budget.

3. The designs of wedding rings are certainly something you cannot compromise, no matter how expensive the ring is. But traditional styles in rings like classic solitaire or three stone rings can surely help the budget a lot along with their irresistible charm.

4. Some couples also tend to substitute the expensive metal or design with its cheaper alternative to invest more share of the budget in a larger diamond.

5. Some brides may find an attractive metal band as wedding ring for their groom. But grooms hardly settle for a plain metal band how much ever the budget may constrain. Grooms usually opt for solitaire diamond rings rather than multi diamond ring for the bride, keeping in mind that diamonds will be something she’ll cherish forever.

Interesting and helpful article but I wanted to make a few comments to your points.

While platinum as a rule of thumb is more expensive than gold, it is by no means out of anyone's price range. My fiance and I were able to pick out a platinum engagement ring for a very comparable price to what a similar gold ring cost.

Also when you look at skimping on the metal in favor of the diamond; yes this does tend to happen. However what you end up with is (in the case of a white metal), a ring that needs more upkeep and needs to be frequently replated to maintain its white appearance (white gold is not naturally white and has to be plated and re-plated).

My fiance and I wanted something that would last a lifetime, just like out love, so we opted for a truly luxurious metal and not a less expensive alternative.

I agree to what you said about the upkeep of white gold as compared to platinum. But the budget stands as one of the main criteria for a couple to decide among two metals. No jewelry connoisseur would disagree to the fact that platinum is lot more expensive than white gold. And it would completely depend on the affordability of cash-strapped couples.

Also its an observation in the diamond engagement ring market that most of the times couples attribute a larger part of amount for a bigger diamond, rather than picking a more expensive metal, in case they have to make a compromise.

I don't think that skimping on diamonds is a good idea. One way to keep the diamonds is to buy an engagement ring with multiple diamonds rather than a ring with a solitaire diamond.

Another way is to buy the ladies engagement ring, ladies wedding band, and mens wedding band as a set. These sets are called "Trio Rings" and can be found on sites like Zales.com and MyTrioRings.com
